Black Business Spotlight: Coach Candice

In 2016, when Candace Ellis started her home and community-based consulting service—C. A. Ellis and Associates—she faced a number of challenges.

“I was working for a business for 15 years,” said the 42-year-old. “I stepped away to complete my practicum [on-the-job experience] in psychology. I just couldn’t manage being in school, doing the practicum, working as the COO for this business, as well as being a single mom.

Candace decided to leave her job and updated her LinkedIn profile. After that, small community-based providers started reaching out to her. “At the time, I realized that I couldn’t be employed by someone, so I started my own business. Instead of me being an employee, I was a contractor,”

Overall being an entrepreneur is hard – to not know when the next contract will come in while attempting to live a fruitful life and practicing what I preach – balancing work and play. It is a daily struggle, that I overcome by reminding myself that I am where I am supposed to be and living in my purpose.

I would like the world to know that hard work and dedication pay off; that even though your journey may not look like others – you write your own path. I was constantly questioned about my decision to go from a Bachelor in MIS, to MBA to MS in Psychology – others didn’t see my vision; however, I did. It is my unique skills that coin the title of Coach Candice and Therapist for Entrepreneurs.
